Goals elude Stillwater girls in loss to Cascia Hall
STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Lady Pioneers four-game losing streak to end last season continued into their season opener Tuesday against Cascia Hall.
The Pioneers dominated Cascia Hall for most of the game, but Cascia scored a goal in the 51st minute to beat Stillwater 1-0 at Pioneer Stadium.
“We definitely should’ve won that game,” senior Kirsty Baze said. “We were the better team for 90 percent of the game.”
Senior Kim Stebens agreed.
“We passed circles around them,” Stebens said.
The Pioneers did dominate most of the match, allowing Cascia Hall few shot opportunities.
Stillwater finished the game with 17 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Jackie Mills’ goal in the 51st minute was from 20-25 yards out.
“We had a lot of good chances. We just couldn’t get anything to fall for us,” SHS assistant coach Alan Castleberry said. “We really didn’t play like ourselves. We didn’t play a lot of possessions. It was just a rough game. We’re a real possession-oriented team, and we could never get settled down.”
The season opener started differently than last season. Last year, the Pioneers won three of their first four matches. But, in 2008, the last time Stillwater lost its season opener, they finished the season 7-7.
Stillwater travels to Muskogee for a match at 5:30 p.m. on March.
The Pioneers beat the Roughers 4-0 last year in Stillwater. The Pioneers are on the road for the next two games, before returning to Pioneer Stadium for the Stillwater Cup on March 26-27.
