MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — With 36 seconds left in Thursday’s Class B quarterfinal, the Glencoe cheering section began chanting the famous “hey hey, good-bye” song.
Unfortunately, the celebration was premature. Glencoe failed to make free throws in the closing moments as Hammon scored four straight points in the closing seconds to come away with a stunning 35-34 win.
Glencoe (27-3) had the game in hand with a 33-31 lead with 36 seconds left and Forest Stol at the free throw line. Stol went 0-for-2 from the charity stripe, but Glencoe got the rebound and Dalton Salvens hit one of two free throws to put Glencoe up 34-31.
“We had them the entire game,” said John Lazenby III, who had a team-high 12 points. “And all we had to do is make free throws. It shouldn’t have ended that way.”
Running around double screens, Hammon guard Tyler Thiessen hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 10 seconds left. Glencoe turned the ball over on the next possession. Hammon’s Seyth Roebuck was fouled and hit one of two free throws to put Hammon up 35-34 with six seconds left in the game.
Glencoe had one more chance on the in-bounds play, but Stol’s fadeaway 3-pointer sailed wide right. The play was intended for Lazenby III, but he was well covered as Hammon moves on today’s semifinals.
“I told these guys that in tight games, it’s going to come down to free throws, and we just didn’t do that,” coach John Lazenby said. “We’re disappointed, but we had a good season at 21-3.”
Glencoe went 6 of 14 from the line, with 10 of those attempts coming in the final quarter, alone.
Before the fateful final quarter, Glencoe and Hammon went back and forth on the scoreboard. Hammon’s biggest lead was eight, midway through the first quarter. Glencoe led by four twice in the fourth quarter.
Before Thursday’s game, Lazenby talked about the importance of a balanced offense. In the first quarter, with Lazenby III’s touches limited, Slavens scored 6 points.
Lazenby III had 5 of his 12 points in the second quarter. Despite holding Hammon to 3 of 15 shooting in the second and third quarters, Glencoe couldn’t take advantage of the situation.
