Quinata's running carries Wildcats to first-round playoff win

STILLWATER, Okla. — On Nov. 15 in the first round of the state playoffs against the Fairland Owls, Morrison starting quarterback Jordan Quinata was the spark for the Wildcats’ offense — amassing 247 total yards and five total touchdowns in the 44-7 rout.

“It felt good,” Quinata said. “I just played hard and gave 100 percent.”

This performance came after Kiefer targeted Quinata and limited his production two weeks ago. After Quinata rushed for 1,220 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last year, he is now on opponents’ radars. That’s something the sophomore quarterback enjoys.

“I like it because we can give Scotty (Van Dorn) the ball and he can help us out,” Quinata said.

During that playoff game, Fairland focused on limiting Van Dorn after he rushed for over 300 yards against Kiefer. Coach Cory Bales said that opened the door for Quinata to produce.

“After Scotty (Van Dorn’s) week last week, (Fairland) did a good job of shutting him down and that enabled Jordan to have some good carries and yards,” Bales said.

Quinata knows what it’s like being a part of a one-two punch. Last season as a running back, he and then-senior quarterback Kyle Collins led the offensive attack. The sophomore quarterback said he and Van Dorn make a great team.

“We run the offense pretty well,” Quinata said. “We know how to move, what holes to run through and how the offense works.”

Quinata has a chance to lead the Wildcats into the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010 when Morrison hosts Elmore City-Pernell Friday in the second round.

“It’s exciting,” Quinata said. “We’re just taking it one game at a time.”

The Wildcats have had some great quarterbacks including Shawn Walls, who led Morrison to four-straight state championships. Quinata isn’t ready to add his name to the list just yet.

“I just go out and do my job,” he said.
