STILLWATER, Okla. —
Coyle senior Joseph Hales has mostly been a playmaker on defense, leading the Bluejackets to four shutouts in five games. Last Friday against South Coffeyville, Hales recovered a fumble but also contributed on the offensive end with a 62-yard touchdown run.
“My main goal was holding on to the ball,” Hales said. “I had a hard time in practice with that. Our fullback got hurt and I had to step up and help the team out and that’s what I did.”
Coach Shane Weathers said he was proud of how his senior linebacker played.
“Joe Hales had a great night defensively,” Weathers said. “We called his number a few times on offense.”
Coyle finished the season on a six-game winning streak in which it outscored its opponents 308-36. Most of those games didn’t go the full four quarters, including Friday’s 58-8 victory, which ended seconds into the second half.
“We were trying to scare the offense,” Hales said. “We made sure we got good hits on them. Playing physical and mentally tough. We just need to keep it together and play as a team.”
The Bluejackets’ 8-2 record is their best finish to the regular season and they take on Keota this Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
“This was a big turnout for our last home regular season game,” Hales said. “I’m just looking forward to playoffs. We’ve had a good year and most of our games were easy. If we go out there and strike fast we will be in pretty good shape.”
Honorable mentions
Gary Hunter, Coyle football
Hunter came off the bench after the Bluejackets had the game well in hand against South Coffeyville Friday, but was effective in running the ball. With four carries, Hunter gained 106 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that ended the game.
Laine Noble, Coyle football
Noble was a key player on both sides of the ball for Coyle in its 58-8 victory over South Coffeyville. Offensively, he converted two, 2-point conversions. Defensively, he intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Ryan Weathers, Coyle football
The junior quarterback was responsible for three of Coyle’s touchdowns against the Lions Friday. Weathers weaved in between defenders for a 26-yard touchdown and threw two touchdown passes to Tony Aska and Fidel Simpson. For the second straight season Coyle is returning to the playoffs.
Austin Allen, Perry football
For the third straight game, Allen rushed for more than 100 yards, with his latest victim being Newkirk last Friday. Allen rushed for 163 yards and scored on a 51-yard touchdown run. The 32-0 victory guaranteed Perry the third seed out of District 1-2A.
