STILLWATER, Okla. —
Oklahoma State University football coach Mike Gundy said he was pleased with how two of his former players’ performances in the NFL — quarterback Brandon Weeden and Josh Cooper.
Gundy said he didn’t see the highlights from the Cleveland Browns’ 34-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He is proud of how Weeden is playing in the NFL.
“I was happy that he continued to play well,” Gundy said. “I know he has thrown 10 interceptions. I watched him play against the Ravens and thought he played fantastic for the amount of pressure that he is getting.”
Cooper was a wide receiver for the Cowboys from 2008 to 2011 and is in the top 10 in career yards and receptions. Gundy said he really had to discipline Cooper but added that he has a love for the game.
“His first week he was down here after curfew on the strip and we disciplined him,” Gundy said. “We put him on the stair master for a week or so during practice and would try to get him to quit and he wouldn’t. He came in my office and asked he could get off of stair master. I said ‘I really forgot that you were over there. I asked how long have you been over there?’ He said, ‘Five or six days.’ I said, ‘That’s probably good you can get off.’
“He’s come a long ways. He’s a great story of a young man that loves to play football. He’s had a lot of success here. I think he was the third all-time leader in receptions. Played hurt all the time and was just a great team player.”
On Sunday, Cooper played in his first game and caught two passes from Weeden for 39 yards. Weeden completed 17 of 29 passes for 231 yards and threw two touchdowns and one interception.
