STILLWATER, Okla. —
Clint Chelf has been waiting in the wings as a junior quarterback for the Oklahoma State football team.
The Enid native knows it takes just one play and his name could be called. That moment could be now.
With J.W. Walsh likely done for the season and with no solid answer whether Wes Lunt is, or will be, ready to start — and even finish — Saturday's game against Texas Christian University. With that, it would be up to Chelf, now the starter/backup quarterback for the Cowboys, to keep them afloat the remainder of the season.
"That's how it's been a couple weeks now already with Wes being hurt and it just being me and J.W.," Chelf said. "So I've been preparing like I'm just one play away. So I've been ready."The role is really no different for Chelf now that Walsh is out. The depth chart for this week lists Lunt as the starter and Chelf as the backup — a role he has been in since Lunt went down with an injury against Louisiana-Lafayette.
"I was getting about the same amount of reps when Wes was out," Chelf said. "... You always try to stay ready because you never know when an opportunity is going to come and you've just got to make the most of it."
