Stillwater Sports Minute: Blake Jackson coming on strong for Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. — Junior college transfer Blake Jackson came to Oklahoma State as a player coach Mike Gundy felt could have an immediate impact for the Cowboys.

With only 21 catches for 449 yards, it hasn’t exactly been a breakout season for Jackson but it isn’t because the Cowboys aren’t trying to utilize the 6-foot-3-inch junior from Gilbert, Ariz.

“I wouldn’t say he under utilized,” Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. “We’ve been trying to use him whenever we can. We want to get him the ball more and get him more involved in our offense.”

It’s been a season of change for Jackson — possibly a big reason for his early season struggles. A tight end in junior college, Jackson is learning to catch more passes as a inside receiver while trying to learn Oklahoma State’s offense.

“He’s improved quite a bit,” Monken said. “He’s a good football player and he likes football. We ask a lot of him, but it’s nothing we don’t think he can handle.”

Jackson may be still trying to find the handle on Oklahoma State’s offense, but he doesn’t have a problem getting a handle on passes that come his way.

“A lot of it was just him being open and Wes (Lunt) finding him,” Monken said. “Sometimes it just works out that way. He has a lot of ability to make explosive plays. He’s a good football player, who we would like to get the ball to more.”
