Lazenby III, Slavens go for career highs as Glencoe beats Coyle

STILLWATER — GLENCOE — If Glencoe coach John Lazenby Jr. knew before Tuesday night’s game against Coyle that two players would combine for 65 points, he figured the Panthers would be in trouble.

Glencoe forward Dalton Slavens would have been worried and guard John Lazenby III thought the same.

Coyle rolled in the high-scoring duo of Jerrick Warren and Adonis Sumlin, but it was Slavens and Lazenby III that both hit career-highs as Glencoe rolled to a surprisingly easy 83-50 victory.

“Something just clicked I guess,” Lazenby III said.

Lazenby III tied a career-high with 34 points and Slavens set a new career-high with 31 points, but it came mostly when the Class B No. 5 Panthers (19-2) got a second shot at a missed opportunity.

Late in the first half, Warren and Sumlin went to the bench in foul trouble. Sumlin had four fouls and Warren had three. Glencoe wasn’t able to take advantage of an obviously short-handed Coyle (10-8). The No. 18 team in Class B was still within 11 points at the break.

Lazenby Jr. reminded his team about the opportunity they missed, but Glencoe got a second chance only a few minutes into the third quarter. Sumlin fouled out of the game and Coyle went short-handed again. Lazenby III and Slavens took off into the fourth quarter.

“When they came out in the first half, we should have took over,” Slavens said. “When those two are out, or Adonis is out, we just have to get on them right then.”

They did and the two combined for a 16-0 run that put Glencoe 26 points ahead. The pair’s run, which was filled with easy transitions baskets, was capped when Slavens raced down next to Lazenby III and called for the sophomore guard to shoot it. Instead, Lazenby dished off and Slavens took two steps and laid the ball into the basket.

“It just seemed like we were connecting out there,” Slavens said. “Me and John both, we were hitting each other on passes and finding the open shots. It felt good. It felt like we had chemistry like we have been playing together our whole life. It was fun, it was exciting out there.”

Lazenby III left the game first, and when Slavens checked out for good with just more than 3 minutes remaining, the pair had combined for all but 8 of Glencoe’s 73 points at the time. Most of those points came when Sumlin left the floor.

“He’s our only senior and only upperclassmen so that’s a lot of experience leaving the floor,” Coyle coach Josh Sumrall said. “It just left a lot of youth on the floor. We’ve never made that excuse and we aren’t going to start now. We’ve got a lot of growing up to do in a pretty quick time.”

Warren led Coyle with 14 points and Sumlin added 11. Neither scored in the fourth quarter.
