Casey goes into Hall

Former Morrison, Cushing coach honored with 9 others

TULSA — A crowd of more than 800 people watched as Morrison’s Dennis Casey was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame along with nine other coaches Sunday.

The induction ceremony and banquet was held at the Southern Hills Marriott in conjunction with the 2010 All-State Games, which wrapped up Friday night with the football game at Jenks. The other nine inductees were Varryl Franklin of Millwood, Dennis Gaines of Harrah, Luther Hunter of Putnam City, Russell Kruse of Adair, Steve Mancillas of Moore, Bob Patterson of Marlow, Frank Piccirillo of Ponca City, Royce Skocdopole of Bixby and Gerald Benn of Tahlequah, who was honored for distinguished service.

For the past 28 years, Casey has served as a teacher, football, basketball and track coach, junior high and high school principal, athletic director, superintendent of schools and regional supervisor for state career tech.  Casey’s teams have set records and he has made his mark in every sport.

While serving as the head football coach at Morrison from 1982-93, his Wildcat teams won seven state championships, one state runner-up finish, eight area titles, 10 regional titles, and 10 district titles in a 130-15 span. His teams also won four academic state championships at two different schools.  

Casey was 19-14 at Cushing from 1993-96 and 25-9 at Claremore from 1997-2000. He has been a head coach for the East team in the All-State games.

Numerous former players have gone on to become coaches, accounting for 12 state championships in Oklahoma.  Casey’s overall football coaching record is 184-38, which is an average of more than 10 wins per year, over an 18-year span.  His playoff record stands at 35-8.

His basketball teams won one area, three regional and four district titles and made two state tournament appearances.  His cumulative record was 99-33.

Casey lives on a small ranch in western Pawnee County and runs a cow-calf operation and grows alfalfa on his land.  He has been married to his wife Kelly for more than 30 years, and they have three grown children, Heath, Kelcey and Kamie, and three grandchildren.
