STILLWATER, Okla. — The No. 2 Oklahoma State University wrestling team’s upper weights helped rally to an 18-12 victory over the No. 4 Iowa Hawkeyes. The key to the victory was third period scoring as Oklahoma State’s 165-285 wrestlers recorded key points.
“I’ve been in enough (dual meets) to know it’s about scoring in the third period,” coach John Smith said. “In those critical matches we scored in the third period.”
The Cowboys’ upper weights outscored Iowa 11-8 in the third period. Tyler Caldwell, Chris Chionuma and Blake Rosholt each scored a takedown in the third period to clinch their respective matches. Caldwell said it was key for him to come out on top.
“I knew my shots would open up more,” Caldwell said. “I didn’t want it to come down to a ride-out. It’s probably good he got his escape before I got my riding time. It allowed me to get more right away.”
Chris Perry and Alan Gelogaev recorded escapes in the third to help clinch their matches. Perry won his match on his 1:19 riding time. Without the escape, Perry would have faced an extra period.
