STILLWATER, Okla. —
Oklahoma State freshman Brittney Martin came to Oklahoma State as one of the more heralded scorers in the nation.
Wednesday it was Martin’s defense that did all the talking in the 90-55 win over Texas State.
Martin held Texas State’s Diamond Ford to 1 of 14 from the field and five points. Ford came into Wednesday’s game averaging 23 points per game.
“We asked her to guard Diamond Ford, who was averaging 23 points a game, and she held her to 1 of 14 from the floor and five points,” Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said. “She really accepted the challenge and did a nice job.”
Martin’s defensive performance may have surprised a lot of fans, but it didn’t come as a surprise to Littell.
“She’s coming around,” Littell said. “That’s a work in progress. She never had to do that much in high school, as many of the players don’t have to do. I’m glad she embraced that idea of trying to be a lockdown defender for us... I don’t think it was something that she was real great at when she came here.”
With Martin’s performance, Littell said he feels comfortable putting the freshman phenom on other team’s stars when the Cowgirls get to Big 12 play.
“She’s a logical choice,” Littell said. “She’s big, she’s strong, she has some athleticism and she has some grit to her. She’s just the logical choice on our team.”
