Pioneers look to continue momentum against Bartlesville

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Pioneers wrestling team gained some confidence after defeating Claremore which beat them last year, on Nov. 27. The Pioneers will look to carry that confidence into their 7 p.m. Tuesday dual against Bartlesville at Pioneer Fieldhouse.

“The kids have picked it up in the weight room,” coach Doug Chesbro said. “They see we are in a better position than last year. Some kids came to me who weren’t sure if they were going to wrestle and decided to join.”

Stillwater beat Claremore 48-30. Chesbro said it was good to see where his team was at early in the season.

“We’ve been working out for the last two months,” Chesbro said. “It was good to see how our shape and technique that we’ve been working on is. It was nice getting to wrestle at home and to take advantage of that.”

Against Claremore, the Pioneers recorded pins in the 106, 120, 126, 145, 195 and 220 weight classes. Chesbro said his team has the edge in the smaller weight classes but thinks it will be a good match.

“I know they have a state runner-up at 152,” Chesbro said. “We will either wrestle Logan Anderson or Chris Colthrop. I don’t think it will matter who we wrestle that match favors them. Noah Findley was a state qualfier in the 126 weight class. He defeated Benny Teegarden in the regional tournament. They met twice and split. They are returning six starters. I’m excited about the match.”

Chesbro said his team looked good but there are some things indivdually it can improve.

“We have some wrestlers who are young and a little tentative on the mat,” Chesbro said. “They may not be as aggressive as I had hoped and just need a little confidence. That’s OK. We’ve got plenty of time before the regional tournament.”
