Morrison's Conklin a force on the Wildcats' defensive line

MORRISON, Okla. — The Morrison Wildcats had one of the stingiest defenses in the area in route to a 9-3 record and making it to the second round of the playoffs. Senior defensive end Tevin Conklin played a key role.

“We know what everyone is doing on the field,” Conklin said. “We had good communication, ball side and away. We worked as a team.”

Conklin was one of the team leaders in tackles with 67. He also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass, which he returned for a touchdown. The senior defensive end said that was a memorable play for him.

“I was pretty excited,” Conklin said. “I wasn’t really expecting it. I saw the ball and I just went for it.”

Coach Cory Bales said Conklin had a great season at defensive end and was key to the defense’s success.

“He was a good pass rusher,” Bales said. “He could stretch the run. He ran the C gap well and did a good job doubling at tight end for us. Tevin is one of those kids that can move. He’s strong and lanky and can throw people off of him.”

Offensively, Conklin had 23 catches for 410 yards with four touchdowns. He also converted two 2-point conversions. Conklin said he felt his final season went well.

“There were things we could have worked on,” Conklin said. “We all did pretty good.”

The Wildcats finished second in District 7-A and defeated Fairland in the playoffs before falling to the eventual state champion Wynnewood. For most of the season, the Wildcats were ranked in the top 10. In 12 games, Morrison gave up an average of 133 rushing yards for 4.3 yards per carry. Opponents only completed 41 percent of their passes for an average of 68 yards. The Wildcats had a stretch of six games where it allowed their opponents less than 10 points and scored at least 35.

“We were pretty solid up front,” Conklin said. “The secondary I wouldn’t trade any of them for anybody.”
