USA Today reports Gundy will not be Arkansas' next coach

STILLWATER, Okla. — USA Today citing a person close to the University of Arkansas football search process reports the Razorbacks are close to hiring a new football coach.

It won't be Oklahoma State Univesity coach Mike Gundy, USA Today national college football writer George Schroeder said in an Internet posting at approximately 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. The person wouldn't identify the prospect.

UA didn't retain coach John L. Smith after the Razorbacks finished with a 4-8 record. Smith replaced coach Bobby Petrino who was fired before the 2012 season started after a scandal.

Gundy is in his eighth season as OSU's coach. He is the winningest coach in school history. He also has been rumored as a candidate for the University of Tennessee position.

Earlier this week, Gundy wouldn't comment on the possibility of leaving his alma mater for an SEC job. He said he was focusing on getting the Cowboys ready for the Heart of Dallas bowl appearance on Jan. 1.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
