STILLWATER, Okla. —
Typically Oklahoma State freshman Brittney Martin is all smiles, whether she scores a lot of points or gets shutout.
That smile got a little dimmer Thursday when the freshman learned a painful lesson about college basketball — there’s a reason most players wear mouth guards.
“She hit the ground so hard,” Oklahoma State senior forward Lindsey Keller said. “She was up at the top and just kind of faceplanted on the floor. I thought her nose was bleeding, actually.”
“I saw the aftermath and it wasn’t pretty,” Oklahoma State senior forward Toni Young said. “I thought maybe she got hit in the nose but then I saw the teeth. I can imagine the pain that she was in.”
Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said he is unsure whether or not the dental disaster will keep Martin out of practice over the next few days, but Littell said she should be ready to play after the Cowgirls 10-day layoff for finals week.
“You hate that,” Littell said. “She’s a beautiful kid inside and out. It’s just devastating to her to have her teeth knocked out. We heard it went pretty good, but we don’t know a lot of details on that.”
It may have been a freshman mistake — and a painful one at that — but it serves as a valuable lesson to all players. And the next time Martin steps on the court, she will think twice about putting her mouth guard in.
“It’s really sad because she had really pretty teeth,” Keller said. “But you’ve got to wear your mouth guard.”
