STILLWATER, Okla. — Perkins-Tryon sophomore running back Jacob Peyton has ground out the tough yards all season, racking up a few 100-yard rushing games. Last Friday at the Bristow Pirates, Peyton was key in giving the ball back to the Demons as he recovered three fumbles in a 34-27 victory.

Peyton rushed for more than 100 yards in Week 2 against McLoud and two weeks ago against Prague. The sophomore tailback rushed for 49 yards and scored one touchdown against Bristow. This season, Peyton has rushed for 603 yards, which is second on the team to junior Tyler Taff who has 692.

Coach Lloyd Wertman said Peyton is one in his stable of running backs.

“We’ve had fullbacks rush for over 100 yards,” Wertman said. “We have quality running backs. Devin Peyton and Clark Crotty are our fullbacks. Tyler Taff and Jacob and Tanner Bridenstine are our tailbacks. Before he was injured, our quarterback Caleb White was a good rusher.”

White broke his collarbone in the first quarter against Bristow and will miss the rest of the season. Peyton and the Demons face their State Highway 33 rival, Cushing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Perkins.

Honorable mentions

Zac Bledsoe, Perkins-Tryon football

When starting quarterback Caleb White left with a broken collarbone, The sophomore quarterback had to step in and run the offense. Bledsoe handled it like a pro, throwing for 122 yards and two touchdowns. In the fourth quarter, Bledsoe engineered a game-winning drive that was capped off by an 18-yard touchdown pass with 3.1 seconds left.

Tyler Taff, Perkins-Tryon football

Taff led the Demons in rushing with 88 yards and scored one rushing touchdown. The junior also made an impact defensively with a forced fumble and a tackle. Perkins forced two fumbles. Taff is the Demons’ leading rusher through seven games.

Gary Hunter, Coyle football

Hunter only got to play a half, thanks to the eight-man 45-point mercy rule. The senior running back made it productive, as he rushed for a team-leading 93 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-0 victory over Watts. Hunter’s rushing helped Coyle stay in contention for the district title.

Fidel Simpson, Coyle football

Simpson complimented his senior running back nicely with 30 yards rushing and two touchdowns in Coyle’s 50-0 victory over Watts. Simpson has been the Bluejackets’ leading rusher in previous weeks.

Gage Stallworth, Cushing football

Stallworth’s legs continue to roll for the Tigers as his three touchdowns helped Cushing defeat Chandler 27-21 in a come-from-behind victory. Stallworth had touchdowns of two, five and two yards, scoring the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter. The junior amassed 193 yards of total offense.

Eddie Martin, Cushing football

Martin was senior quarterback Bingham Hightower’s favorite target Friday catching five passes for 90 yards. In the third quarter, Martin caught a game-tying 46-yard pass helping Cushing overcome a 14-point deficit. Martin’s touchdown was the start of a 20-point quarter by the Tigers.

Bingham Hightower, Cushing football

Hightower helped the Tigers move the ball through the air, completed nine of 16 passes for 122 yards. Hightower tied the game with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Martin. The senior’s play has helped the Tigers to a 6-1 record and 3-0 in district.
