Tourney time for Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. — Anytime the Stillwater Pioneers go into a tournament the goal is to “win.”

No. 15 Stillwater will play in their final regular season tournament beginning 11:30 a.m.  Thursday. SHS will start with host Shawnee in the Shawnee Tournament.

“You don’t get too many more chances to fix stuff so we have to take care of business,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said.

In both tournaments earlier this season the Pioneers have won their first game and dropped their second. Stillwater has bounced back twice for a win on the final day of the tournaments in Bixby and Ada to place third in both tournaments.

The Shawnee Tournament will have tough teams throughout but the Pioneers are not looking ahead and are staying focussed on Shawnee.

“There’s some tough teams in there. Our first agenda is Shawnee,” Davis said. “You want to win that first game.”

Stillwater suffered a heart-breaking loss at home to Bartlesville last Friday night 62-59. The Pioneers put that in the past and went to rival Ponca City Tuesday and came away with a 56-40 blowout victory.

“We’re winding up and doing what we need to do,” Davis said.

GIRLS

Stillwater has yet to on the right side of the bracket in tournament play this year. For the Lady Pioneers, that is the goal.

Stillwater will travel to the Shawnee Tournament to take on Adrmore at 1 p.m. Thursday.

“We want to play on the right side (of the bracket). We have not done that,” Stillwater coach Clay Stephens said.

Stillwater has had a lot of troubles maintaining the basketball when defenses apply presses. Ardmore will press and trap the Lady Pioneers.

“I would hope we can handle that a little bit better. I think this is a game we can win if we can maintain our composure a little bit and not give them easy points,” Stephens said. “Until we can show that we can handle (presses) better than we have, it’s going to continue.”
