STILLWATER, Okla. — With the regular season over, the Perry Maroons wrestling team is looking to build momentum before the 3A regionals at the Dual State Meet Saturday at Cushing High School.

Coach Ronnie Delk said he feels good about his team and thinks it’s ready.

“We are getting rested,” Delk said. “Some of our guys haven’t wrestled in a week-and-a-half because of forfeits.”

Some of the Maroons’ opponents haven’t had a full team, giving Perry points without having to wrestle. Perry (12-1) won Dual State last year and opens with Geary at noon. Delk said he doesn’t know much about his opponent but said they are well coached. If Perry wins it will go against either Plainview or Vian. In the championship, the Maroons could face either Newkirk, Casica Hall, Berryhill or Little Axe. Delk said he thinks his team is the favorite.

“My team has won a lot of tight battles,” Delk said. “I feel very confident. My junior and senior class have been outstanding.”

In all of their tournaments the Maroons have finished in the top four. Perry won the Big 4 Tournament, finished as runners-up in the Perry Tournament of Champions and fourth in the Yukon Tournament. Delk said his lineup is solid.

“Tevin Williams has been outstanding for us in the lower weights,” Delk said. “We’re tough from 145 to 285. Our heavy weight, Nathan Wade, came up big for us in the Big 4 Tournament.”

After Saturday’s tournament, the Maroons will compete at regionals on Feb. 15-16 at Kingfisher.
