Stillwater swimmers aim at getting even faster

STILLWATER, Okla. — For the final time this season the Stillwater swimmers will dive into their home pool.

Stillwater will host Bixby and Guymon at 6 p.m. Thursday night. The Lady Pioneers will enter the night ranked as the No. 2 team in Class 5A, Bixby girls are No. 3 and Guymon is No. 12. The Stillwater boys are No. 4 as they host No. 1 in 5A Bixby.

The Pioneers will have their hands full with the top-ranked Spartans.

“Bixby has four boys that are very, very fast. I think there’s some events where we can certainly challenge them and maybe beat them. It will be a good test for us. Hopefully the kids will be up for it,” Stillwater coach Kurt Goebel said.

Stillwater is hoping to fight from getting the flu to stay healthy for the regional meet on Feb 7-8.

“(The flu) has been tapping into our team quite a bit,” Goebel said. “It’s serious. It’s going through our community like nobody’s business. We’re hoping that the kids are healthy and can go swim during regionals.”

Because the aspect of swimming changed this season the Stillwater teams are still swimming hard. Last year there was a state qualifying time. This year the swimmers will qualify by their performances at regional meets.

“Weighing it down to just one meet will be pretty interesting. The real task is to make sure the kids are healthy,” Goebel said. “I think the kids are swimming really fast.”
