Carney hope home cooking paves way to state

CARNEY, Okla. — Last week the Carney Lady Bulldogs got to enjoy the comforts of home when they hosted A Class B district championship. On Thursday, Carney will get to host regionals in its own backyard as Frontier, New Lima and Bowlegs are visiting.

Carney (16-7) opens at noon with No. 15 Bowlegs (17-11) and will either face the winner or loser of Frontier (7-20) and No. 6 New Lima (20-7). Carney coach Lindsey Freeman said it’s a neat deal for his team to be home.

“This is what we were hoping for,” Freeman said. “We matchup well with either team and I think if we come out and play at all we have a chance at winning it.”

Frontier coach Erron Kauk said he likes his team’s chances as well, as it’s fresh from winning regionals, outscoring opponents 27-1.

“We wish we were hosting but weren’t ranked well enough to do that,” Kauk said. “I feel good about how we are playing and think we have a good chance to go back to state for a fifth year in a row.”

None of the teams have faced each other. The winners of the first round match play at 6 p.m. to earn a spot in the regional finals, which will start at 2 p.m. Friday. The losers will play to keep their season alive at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will play the loser of the 6 p.m. game at noon on Friday. The decisive game will be at 4 p.m.

The Glencoe Panthers (20-8) will have their hands full as they face Dale, Preston and Roff in Class A baseball regionals at Dale on Friday.

Glencoe opens at 2 p.m. with No. 2 Dale (23-4). The winner will face the winner of No. 4 Roff (20-7) and No. 14 Preston (22-5) at  6 p.m. with that winner advancing to state. The losers play each other at 2 p.m. Saturday. Glencoe lost to Roff in last spring’s Class A state tournament.

The winner of the losers’ bracket game will play at 4 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the 6 p.m. Friday game with the winner advancing to state.
