Stillwater High boys, girls sweep Ponca City

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater High boys’ and girls’ basketball squads swept rival Ponca City in a pair of routs Monday at the Pioneer Fieldhouse.

The Lady Pioneers earned their third-straight victory with a 38-18 win, while the boys team ended a three-game losing streak by rolling past Ponca 73-46.

The Lady Pioneers (9-5) utilized a strong defense and were able to chip away at Ponca City’s defense to earn their victory.

The Lady Cats were held scoreless in the second and third quarters and didn’t reach double-digits in scoring until the 5:24 mark in the fourth — which made the game 33-10.

“Defensively, again, we were solid. We held them for over 17 or 18 minutes with a bucket or even a point,” Stillwater girls coach Carl Treat said. “Any time you can do that, it makes the game a little easier.”

LaNesha Middleton led SHS in scoring with 9 points, followed by 7 points each from Atkins and Jenny Scarbrough.

“They were obviously keying on stopping LaNesha. Any time she touched it, there were three girls around her,” Treat said. “So I was really pleased the way the other girls stepped up and were able to knock down some shots to take that pressure off of her and off of our team.”

In the boys game, the Pioneers overcame another cold shooting night by playing sound basketball. Stillwater turned the ball over just seven times in the game — and only three in the first half, which helped them get out to a 31-17 halftime lead.

“I’m very proud of that fact. When you’ve got three or four different ball handlers like we have, and to only have seven turnovers, I’m very proud of that,” SHS boys coach Michael Davis said.

Holcomb led all scorers with 18 points — 15 of which came in the first half. Rico Thompson scored 14 points, with 10 coming from the line. Dylan Murrell finished with 12 points and Jon Littell chipped in 10 — with 6 coming from the charity stripe.

The Stillwater squads will compete in a pair of tournaments this weekend. The Lady Pioneers will play in the Moore John Nobles Classic and will face Moore in the first round at 1 p.m. Thursday. The SHS boys will take part in the Shawnee Invitational and will open with Choctaw at 2 p.m. Thursday.
