STILLWATER, Okla. —
Two years ago as a freshman, Ryan Weathers was just learning how to run coach Josh Sumrall’s offense. Now in his third season as the starting point guard, Weathers and Sumrall are on the same page.
“I know what (Sumrall) wants me to do,” Weathers said. “I don’t have to ask as many questions.”
Sumrall said Weathers is a very special player.
“He runs the team and is the best player-coach on the floor,” Sumrall said. “He’s played since he was freshman and knows what I want. He gets the ball in the right spots at the right times. He’s a really good shooter. He knows when to pass and shoot.”
On Dec. 18 against Frontier, Weathers scored 15 points, which was tied for second on the team in Coyle’s 64-53 victory. The junior said he understands the role he plays.
“You are always the leader,” Weathers said. “You run the offense and try to create separation on the floor. Make sure that everyone is on the same page.”
That role isn’t foreign to Weathers as he’s been the starting quarterback. Sumrall said that’s helped him on the basketball court.
“You have to have that leadership role as a quarterback,” Sumrall said. “He knows how to run an offense.”
Weathers agreed with his coach adding it’s similar.
“All the pressure is on you,” Weathers said. “You get used to it. You have to run through progressions.”
Weathers said he looks for the decision that’s going to best benefit his team.
“I try to distribute the ball and take smart shots,” Weathers said. “I try to better my game and just make plays for my team.”
