PERRY, Okla. —
The Stillwater Pioneers wrestling team has had no problem winning the lower-weight matches. The upper weights have been a different story. Tuesday night at Perry’s John Divine Hall, that story continued as the Maroons recorded four falls in a 46-16 victory.
“The upper weights — 70, 92, 95, 220 and heavyweight took care of business tonight,” Perry coach Ronnie Delk said. “I was very pleased with them.”
Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said he was pleased with the effort of his upper weights adding they are gaining experience.
“We won the matches we were supposed to win,” Chesbro said. “I thought we had a good chance at 120 and 160. If we would have got those matches, we would have got 6 of 14. That keeps you in the money most of the time.”
The Pioneers grabbed the lead early. Kennedy Monday pulled out a 3-1 decision over Dalton Revels in the 106-pound match. Kaid Brock followed with a major decision victory over Tevin Williams. King Williams recorded a major decision followed by a technical fall victory by Joe Smith. Delk said his lower-weight wrestlers needed to wrestle at their pace.
“Dalton let Monday stick around and wrestle his pace and not wrestle our pace,” Delk said. “Dalton is disappointed but he will bounce back. He will be fine.”
Chesbro said the 106-pound match was a good battle.
“Those kids will battle the rest of their career,” Chesbro said. “That’s good solid win coming off an illness last week. King Williams, whose been on the bench the last three weeks, took advantage of his opportunity to wrestle and did well.”
The match turned in Perry’s favor in the 152-pound bout. Austin Allen recorded a fall with 15 seconds left in the first. Before that he recorded two takedowns and a near fall. David Thomas gave the Maroons the lead with a decision victory. Thomas led 5-0 after two takedowns and an escape. Cory Revier rallied with two takedowns and an escape to tie the match at 5 in third. Thomas finished Revier off with a takedown and a near fall.
After that, Cole Ingram, Bo Montez, Kyle Varley and Nathan Wade won by fall and Garrett Beier recorded a major decision. Delk said his higher weights controlled the pace.
“They kept the pressure on those guys,” Delk said. “Our guys at the upper weights wrestled their match pace.”
The Pioneers host Midwest City at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Maroons travel to Yukon for a tournament.
“We got a lot of big teams there,” Delk said. “A lot of 6A teams and nationally ranked teams there.”
