UPDATE: Knowledge of passing game propelled Yurcich to Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator position

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University coach Mike Gundy said Mike Yurcich's experience coaching quarterbacks and knowledge of the passing game propelled the Division II coach to the offensive coordinator/quarterback coach position at OSU.

Gundy announced Yurcich's hiring via Twitter on Thursday morning. "Proud to announce Mike Yurcich as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at #okstate," Gundy wrote.

Later, the coach expounded on the hire.

"He played quarterback and has been a student of the position as well as a student of offensive football for 14 years," Gundy added. "He will be in place immediately to start getting prepared for spring football."

Yurcich, a relative unknown nationally, spent the past two seasons at Division II Shippensburg (Pa.) as the offensive coordinator, after five seasons filling the same role at Division II Edinboro University. He'll be Oklahoma State's third offensive coordinator in four seasons after Dana Holgorsen and more recently Todd Monken, left the Cowboys to accept head coaching jobs at the Division I level.

Yurcich helped Shippensburg rank first nationally among Division II schools in total offense and second nationally in scoring offense with more than 46 points per game. His only Division I experience came in 2003-04 when he served as a graduate assistant and receivers coach at the University of Indiana.

"Joining the program at Oklahoma State is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family," Yurcich said. "I am excited to continue the offensive firepower that has been in place at OSU for many years. I've often admired the OSU system and I'm looking forward to learning and then teaching the Oklahoma State offense."

A 1999 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, Yurcich played quarterback for three seasons in college. He also played quarterback at Euclid, Ohio, High School.
