Area football teams hope to make noise in playoffs

CUSHING, Okla. —

While some teams will be turning in their equipment on Monday, six area teams will return to the practice field to prepare for the first round of the state playoffs next week.

The Cushing Tigers finished second in District 2-3A with a 5-1 district record and an 8-2 overall record. On Friday they will host the Blanchard Lions (8-1, 5-1), who finished third in District 1-3A. Coach Barrett Shupe said his team will be in for a challenge.

“They have been ranked in the top 10 all year,” Shupe said. “They are a really good in all three phases. It’s the state playoffs and we can’t take a play off, we have to play all four quarters.”

Shupe said he was pleased with how his kids played during the regular season.

“I thought the kids worked hard,” Shupe said. “They practiced well and they prepared well.”

The Coyle Bluejackets (8-2, 8-1) clinched second in District 3-B with their 58-8 victory against South Coffeyville on Friday and their best regular season record. Coyle will host Keota (8-2, 7-2), who finished third in District 4-B.

“I’ve watched film on them,” coach Shane Weathers said. “It’s going to be a good test. They run a similar offense and same type of plays we ran last year. Defensively, they run a 3-3.”

The Morrison Wildcats (8-2, 5-1) took second in District 7-A after losing 23-8 at Kiefer on Friday. Morrison will host Fairland (6-3, 4-2), the third place finisher in District 8-A.

The Perry Maroons (6-4, 4-2) will enter the playoffs on the momentum of a four-game winning streak and visit the District 2-2A runner-up Millwood Falcons (8-1, 5-1). Coach Craig Hixon said his team played well in the last four games.

“It was a great job by our kids to win the last four games and put us in third,” Hixon said. “It should be a good game. The kids are excited. It’s two years in a row that we’ve made playoffs.”

The Yale Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3) finished the season on a high note with a 38-14 victory over Regent Prep on Friday. Yale will visit undefeated District 8-A champion Warner (10-0, 6-0). Coach Craig Ellis feels pretty good about how the regular season went.

“We didn’t play to our potential last night,” Ellis said. “We are healthy and everyone is ready to go. It’s our first winning record in a long time and we are hoping to win a playoff game. Last year we made the playoffs for the first time in a long time.”

The Perkins-Tryon Demons (5-5, 3-3) secured a playoff spot with Chandler’s 69-33 loss to Seminole. The Demons enter the playoffs on a three-game losing streak and visits Jones. Perkins-Tryon is one of two teams to beat Jones this season, edging the Longhorns (8-2, 5-1) by a score of 18-15 in the season opener.
