Glencoe Panthers punch return ticket to state

GLENPOOL, Okla. — An undefeated season and a 57-46 victory over Pond Creek-Hunter sends Glencoe back to the state tournament for the third year in a row.

The Panthers (26-0), reigning Class A state champions, beat Pond Creek-Hunter in an uncharacteristic low-scoring game at the area tournament. The Panthers built momentum off of Jake Lazenby’s 3-pointer at the start of the game. Glencoe had a 13-point edge going in to the second half.

Glencoe coach John Lazenby said he expected Pond Creek-Hunter to deliberately hold the ball. But with a 10-point lead late in the game, he said he felt confident.

“We just kind of slowed ourselves down because we knew we had enough to probably win the game,” Lazenby said.

Ty Lazenby scored 24 points for the team. Jake Lazenby added another 22. Lazenby said his team is now focused on putting together good games at the state tournament.

“We’ve got our ticket, so now we’ll prepare for three days and try to go make another run like we did last year,” Lazenby said.

Glencoe will defend its title beginning Thursday in the first round of the state tournament.

Frontier 62, Pond Creek-Hunter 43

GLENPOOL — The Frontier Lady Mustangs head in to the state tournament off of a victory over Pond Creek-Hunter.

The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 13 point lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Marissa Goodman led Frontier with 26 points. Kristan Molina contributed 23.

Frontier will compete in the state tournament beginning Thursday. Opponent and time will be announced on the OSSAA website.

Ripley 42, Summit Christian 22

STROUD — One more win is all that stands between the Ripley Lady Warriors and the area tournament.

Ripley (20-7) defeated Summit Christian by 20 points in the regional consolation bracket. Wisper Lefthand led the team offensively with 21 points.

The Lady Warriors will play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Stroud against the winner of Depew vs. Rejoice Christian.
