Morrison seeks berth in state quarterfinals with win over Elmore City-Pernell

STILLWATER, Okla. — The last two seasons, the second round was the end of the Morrison Wildcats’ playoff journey. Two years ago they lost to Wayne and last season Wynnewood. Friday night on their home field, the Wildcats hope to reverse that trend when they host the Elmore City-Pernell Badgers at 7:30 p.m. at Dennis Casey Field.

“One of our goals this year is to be playing on Thanksgiving,” Bales said. “The last two years we lost to great teams.”

The Badgers (7-4) enter on a three-game winning streak after beating Central Sallisaw 26-10 in Elmore City. Bales said his team will be playing someone very similiar.

“They run out of the Wing T formation,” Bales said. “The bad weather shouldn’t play too much of a factor since neither one of us pass much.”

Recent forecasts project a high in the mid 30s and lows in the mid 20s for Friday. Elmore City averages 29 points per game and gives up an average of 17. On the other hand, Morrison averages 36 points per game and only gives up 14.

The Wildcats (10-1) are coming off a 44-7 first-round victory over Fairland and are on a nine-game winning streak. Morrison ran for 276 yards but allowed Fairland 191. Bales said the advantage of playing a similar opponent is that he already knows the weaknesses.

“We know what hurts us,” Bales said. “We have to try to get the play stopped before it gets started.”

Sophomore quarterback Jordan Quinata said they will have to play better this week to come out on top.

“We got to show up next week and play harder, smarter and better,” he said.

Quinata is confident that football will be in Morrison’s Thanksgiving plans.

“We had a great first day of practice,” Quinata said. “I feel like we have a good strategy against them.”

The winner of Friday’s game plays the winner of Ringling and Thomas-Fay-Custer in next week’s state quarterfinals.
