Stillwater baseball loses to Fayetteville, 2-1

TULSA, Okla. — In a final tuneup before the start of the Class 6A playoffs, the Stillwater High Pioneers got tested by Arkansas’ reigning Class 7A state champion Friday at Tulsa Metro.

The 11th-ranked Pioneers (25-4) couldn’t rally from an early deficit and lost 2-1 to Fayetteville (Ark.), ranked No. 28 by MaxPreps.

The Purple Dogs scored two runs in the second thanks to a pair of back-to-back singles off Stillwater starter Nick Hollman to start the inning, then a two-out double by Walker Powell pushed the runners across.

It was enough for Fayetteville’s left-hander Kyle Pate, who was the Arkansas state tournament MVP last year and has signed to play at Arkansas, who stifled the Stillwater bats for much of the game.

A single to left by Ryan Hoecker was all the Pioneers could get off Pate through the first four innings, but senior catcher Michael Higgins got to him in the top of the fifth.

Higgins led off with a home run to center to get Stillwater on the board. The Pioneers finally managed to get a few more hits with a single by Harrison Cornforth in the fifth and singles by T.J. Black and Jon Littell in the sixth.

However, the Pioneers had problems keeping those base runners aboard. Cornforth was thrown out at second attempting to steal and Black was picked off at first base.

Stillwater will return to Couch Park next week to host a Class 6A regional tournament with a trip to state on the line. Date, times and opponents are scheduled to be released Sunday on the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association website.
