MORRISON, Okla. — The No. 7 Morrison Wildcats pride themselves on dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Friday against the Yale Bulldogs, Morrison shut down the opponents’ offense and was able to break solid gains in a 40-6 victory.

“They were good tonight,” Morrison coach Cory Bales said. “We did a good job on the option and everyone did their responsibilities. On offense we did a really good job in getting off the football. We created some good holes.”

“They were just more physical than we were,” Yale coach Craig Ellis said. “It’s just one of those deals. They work out hard. ... We were executing but they were able to fight past our blocks on offense. We were there on defense but they were more physical.”

Morrison (5-1), took control from the get-go. Up 8-0, the Wildcats forced a fumble and recovered at Yale’s 29. Freshman running back Jordan Quinata set up Morrison with a 16-yard run to the 13. Senior quarterback Kyle Collins increased Morrison’s advantage to 14-0 on a 4-yard run.

One play provided most of Yale’s offense as junior Devion Saunders got behind the defense and hauled in the pass from junior quarterback Konner Fowler for a 64-yard touchdown. The Wildcats held Yale to 16 yards on the Bulldogs’ other five possessions. Morrison ran 36 plays to Yale’s 16 and had 13 first downs to Yale’s three.

The Wildcats owned the field position battle with their worst at their own 42. Yale’s best field position in the first half was at their own 33, with seconds left in the half. Morrison scored touchdowns on its first four possessions. Quinata led the Wildcats’ attack rushing for 102 yards on eight carries – with his longest run coming on a 38-yard touchdown. Junior Scott VanDorn ran for 56 yards while scoring two touchdowns.

“Him and (Scott) VanDorn (ran well),” Bales said. “We didn’t run the swab a lot tonight with Kyle (Collins), he had a lot of carries last week. They all ran the ball well and we blocked great.

Collins only rushed for nine yards but scored a touchdown. Collins also showed off his arm, throwing for 48 yards on five completions. Morrison scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter to hold a 32-6 halftime advantage.

Action slowed down considerably in the second half, though Morrison took advantage of a fumble by Saunders, with senior John Sanders scoring on a six-yard run. Afterward the Wildcats put in their second-team offense, as they were more concerned with running clock then scoring points.

The Bulldogs’ offense continued to sputter as they fumbled twice and punted three times. Yale attempted a field goal in the final seconds but missed to the left. Junior JR Wakely led the Bulldogs’ attack with 37 yards rushing and caught one pass.

Fowler, who was strong in running and throwing in previous games, was held to 21 yards rushing and only completed four of his 11 passes. Saunders was held to 30 yards rushing, with most coming on the final drive of the game. The junior running back was productive in the receiving game with 82 yards on three catches.

The victory keeps Morrison in first as it has one more district win than Kiefer, who has one less win but its undefeated in district.

“This was a big game. We were both 2-0,” Bales said. “This puts you in good position to still have a chance to win the district. You still got three district games left and they are all important.”

 Yale (4-2, 2-1) hosts Kiefer next Friday. Ellis said his team will give its best shot.

“It will be another tough ballgame for us,” Ellis said. “We’ll just try to get ready.”

The Wildcats visit Drumright, who could still be searching for a district win.
