STILLWATER, Okla. —
In three games against Cal Poly, the Oklahoma State University baseball team scored three runs. It scored more than that with one swing Tuesday.
Zach Fish’s grand slam in the bottom of the second provided a much-needed spark as the Cowboys beat Dallas Baptist 9-7 at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
“It was awesome,” Oklahoma State third baseman Mark Ginther said. “He’s such a good guy, and you hated to see him struggle like he did in California. You just knew it was a matter of time before he would go off.”
After a rough first inning, where the Patriots (3-1) scored a run off a double, a passed ball and a wild pitch, Cowboy starter Chase Stevens (1-0) calmed down and threw six scoreless innings to pick up the win. Stevens struck out 10 and walked two in seven innings.
“(Stevens) only threw about 50 pitches on Saturday,” Oklahoma State coach Frank Anderson said. “He was excited early, but he did a good job of giving us six innings against a pretty tough Dallas Baptist club.”
While Stevens dominated on the mound, Anderson said that type of offensive outburst is what he expects to see out of Oklahoma State (1-3) more often than not.
Along with Fish’s slam, Robbie Rea belted a 2-run homer to left in the sixth, while Ginther went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
“This was huge for us,” Anderson said. “Our confidence was a little shaken, so getting those early runs really relaxed us. There was so much pressure (in California) that the guys were trying to hit 10-run home runs. I thought our approach was much better today.”
