The last time the Stillwater Pioneers boys basketball team played Edmond North, SHS didn’t make a single 3-pointer, missed 10 free throws and also missed the services of senior point guard Jordan Pound.
A week later, Pound was back in the lineup, the Pioneers found their shooting touch and some rugged defense. The result was a 57-52 win over North in Edmond on Friday night.
In the girls game, the Lady Pioneers couldn’t find any offense in the first half, falling 64-32 to No. 2 Edmond North.
SHS boys 57, North 52
Last week, the two teams met in the Edmond Tournament, with North coming away with a 56-47 win.
SHS won Friday night thanks to its play on the defensive end and timely offense.
“We played great defense tonight,” SHS boys coach Michael Davis said. “We turned up the intensity and put it on them for the whole game. We pressed the whole game and our speed wore them down in the second half.”
Alex Budke paced the Pioneers (2-5) with 15 points while Jevon Bennett added 10 points and led the Pioneers with 9 rebounds.
Josh Pierre scored 9 points and Pound, playing his first game since spraining an ankle before the Edmond Tournament, added 7 points.
“Alex did a tremendous job offensively for us,” Davis said. “Jordan’s a guy we run everything through on the offense and we were a lot smoother tonight with him running the point.”
Stillwater outrebounded North 29-16.
The Pioneers are off until they play in the Putnam City Tournament on Jan. 7-9.

North 64, SHS 32
Playing a top-ranked team for the second time in a week probably wasn’t what the Lady Pioneers wanted or needed.
It also didn’t help that Edmond North was coming off its first loss of the season.
North’s Elizabeth Donohoe scored 16 points and North built a 37-11 halftime lead en route to the 32-point win.
“They played like the No. 2 team in the state tonight,” SHS girls coach Carl Treat said. “We struggled offensively and had too many turnovers in the first half. The second half we played hard.”
Austyn Iven led the way for the Lady Pioneers (1-6) with 11 points, including hitting three
3-pointers, while Emma Gade scored 8.
Stillwater next plays in the Bristow Tournament on Jan. 4-9.
