SHS girls shut out by Broken Arrow in soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. —
The Stillwater Lady Pioneers’ bid for a 2-0 district record Tuesday night wasn’t going to be easy.
To achieve that, they had to beat Broken Arrow, the No. 4-ranked team in Class 6A. Broken Arrow played like a top five team and Stillwater didn’t have an answer in the Lady Pioneers’ 4-0 loss to the Tigers at Pioneer Stadium.
Stillwater is 1-1 in District 3 play, while Broken Arrow improves to 3-0. The Lady Pioneers face a big district game Friday against Del City, which entered Tuesday’s play 0-3 in districts.
Friday will also be Senior Night for five Stillwater players, who are trying to bring Stillwater its first state playoff berth in school history.
“Our goal was to beat Broken Arrow,” Stebens said. “But it didn’t turn out that way. It’s (Senior Night), not something we’ve looked forward to. It’s kind of the games we look forward to.”
Stillwater (5-4) held off Broken Arrow’s attack for most of the first half. Broken Arrow (4-2) broke through with goals in the 25th and 35th minutes in the first half.
Stillwater had a chance to possibly go into halftime with a 2-2 tie. Paige Wikle, who had both of Stillwater’s shots on goal, had a breakaway with a clear shot to the goal, but the ball went off Wikle’s foot and away from the goal. Wikle’s second shot on goal barely missed the goal wide right.
Stillwater was held to seven shots. Broken Arrow scored 33 seconds into the second half, and added its fourth goal of the night in the 55th minute.
“They did everything better than us,” coach John Fields said. “They pressured the ball every time. Their passes were short and crisp. When they needed to be long and strong, they did it. Ours were too short, tentative. We were really afraid to take them on. We just kept dropping back defensively, because we were worried about them.
“First half, girls played well. Second half, we just gave it away. They clearly outclassed us with speed, skill and agility. They’re just a great team.”
