SHS boys run out of gas in Stillwater Cup
STILLWATER, Okla. —
Following the Stillwater Pioneers’ loss in the third-place game of the inaugural Stillwater Cup, coach Seth Condley wrapped up the day with six telling words.
“We just ran out of gas,” Condley said.
The Pioneers lost 5-0 to Santa Fe South, the defending Class 4A champs, on Saturday night at Pioneer Stadium. However, the Saints were just one of three opponents facing the Pioneers — Stillwater was also fighting fatigue and steady 30-40 mile per hour winds.
“We just got tired,” Condley said. “A lot of my starters play every game and that was our third game today. They’re a good team, but we’re not 5-0 worse than them.”
The Saints’ Jaime Fregoso opened up the scoring with a goal with 6:02 remaining in the first half, giving SFS a 1-0 lead at the half.
Then the floodgates opened. David Medrano scored to make it 2-0 nearly seven minutes in the second session. But the game got out of hand when a Christian Morales goal with 24:49 remaining was immediately answered by a Gabriel Hernandez strike 57 seconds later to increase the lead to 4-0.
Hernandez scored again with 8:12 left to wrap up the scoring at 5-0.
Condley said with his team fighting fatigue and inclement weather, the No.1 team in 4A is not a desired opponent.
“They’re defending champs for 4A and soccer is a lot like baseball or wrestling in the regard that you can’t look into the classification,” he said. “Perry is 2A and they could come in and win the 6A title in wrestling. That’s how soccer is, too, and Santa Fe South has so much depth, they won a game in the tournament using their J.V. They’re very good.”
Condley said despite ending the first Stillwater Cup with two losses, his team can take away a lot of positives from the tournament to prepare for district play and use it as motivation for next season’s cup.
“Loved to have had a trophy, but that’s fuel for next year,” Condley said.
