ARK CITY, Kan. — The Stillwater Pioneers wrestling team started its season with a bang as it won five duals to capture the Ark City Dual Tournament championship.

“The kids wrestled well,” coach Doug Chesbro said. “Everyone got matches. We moved people around and had a couple people wrestle up a weight and they handled it well.”

Stillwater opened the tournament with a 56-4 dual victory over Maize. In the second matchup, the Pioneers defeated Kapaun 52-13, then defeated Newton 51-21, Newkirk 63-8. Stillwater clinched the championship with a 57-15 victory over host Ark City.

The Pioneers (5-0) had five wrestlers earn All-Tournament team — Kaid Brock (126), Benny Teegarden (132), Tristan Moran (145), Joe Smith (152) and Chandler Rogers (170). Each of those wrestlers were a perfect 5-0. Chesbro said he was proud of those wrestlers and others.

“The kids beat some quality wrestlers,” Chesbro said. “Chase Lane beat a state champion from Newkirk. Benny Teegarden defeated a state champion from Ark City. Chandler Rogers and Tristan Moran were just smooth dominant wrestlers.

The Pioneers will travel to Bartlesville on Tuesday and open their home schedule with Sapulpa on Thursday.
