Cowgirls look to defend Bedlam Cup

STILLWATER, Okla. — A year ago, in the inaugural Bedlam Cup in Norman, Oklahoma State University golfer Amy Ruengmateekhun stood over a short putt on the 18th hole of the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club not knowing exactly how important the putt was.

But she did once her teammates reacted once she drained the momentum-changing putt to help give the Oklahoma State women’s golf team a 6-5 victory in the Ryder Cup style format event.

“I didn’t even know, so when I made the putt the team started screaming and yelling and were so happy and I was just like, ‘OK, I didn’t know how big it was,’” said Ruengmateekhun, who rallied from 2-down with three holes remaining to win the match and give OSU a crucial full point in the team race. “It was only like a three or four footer, but it still meant a lot getting the chance to make that putt and help the team out with that point.”

The newly minted Big 12 Conference women’s golf champions will attempt a repeat of last year’s victory over their in-state rival when the Cowgirls host this year’s Bedlam Cup Saturday at Karsten Creek Golf Course.

“OU and Oklahoma State have such a good rivalry, and fortunately this year both teams are good,” second-year coach Alan Bratton said. “It should be a great day of golf and hopefully we come out on top.”

The Bedlam Cup will consist of alternate-shot matches in the morning, and follow with singles matches in the afternoon session. It’s the only event the Cowgirls compete in that is not of the stroke play variety.

“I’ve been waiting for a chance to play the team, Ryder Cup type of tournament and this Bedlam Cup will be very similar to that,” said Oklahoma State freshman Julie Yang, who has been a big part of OSU’s recent success with back-to-back tournament titles. “I’m just really looking forward to it. And the fact that it’s at Karsten Creek, I think we have a big advantage.”

Action is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. The event is open the public.
