Glencoe's Baker, Cushing's Boykin among area state track champions

STILLWATER, Okla. — Every high school track athlete dreams of standing on the awards’ podium at the state meet. Friday and Saturday several area high school athletes got to experience just that.

Glencoe freshman Jenny Baker recorded a personal best as she won the Class A discus with a throw of 125 feet and five inches. Baker also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet and 5.5 inches. Coach Stephen Castlebury said she threw well.

“She had three throws that would have won state,” Castlebury said. “She was well ahead of the competition. She has a bright future if she keeps working at it.”

Cushing’s Hunter Boykin won the Class 4A 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75. Also placing for the Tigers was Eddie Martin with a fourth place finish in the long jump (20 feet, 3 inches). Hannah Burris finished fourth in the high jump and Che’Ron Lewis finished fifth in the discus to place for the Lady Tigers. Coach Barrett Shupe was pleased with all of his athletes.

“We were excited for Hunter, he did a great job,” Shupe said. “Hannah did a wonderful job in the high jump. Eddie did a wonderful job in the long jump. He was hurting a little but toughed it out.”

Frontier’s Jalissa Gum won the Class A 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.71. The senior also finished second in the high jump (5 feet) and fifth in the 200-meter dash.

Perkins-Tryon senior McKenzie Stanford won the Class 3A high jump with a height of five feet and six inches. Stanford also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.37. John Sasser finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.

The Coyle Lady Bluejackets finished near the top in three events. Tyra Aska finished third in the 200-meter dash (27.21). The 400-meter relay team of Anika Smalley, Taren Aska, Moshe Boyles and Tyra Aska finished second (52.18). The 800-meter relay team finished second (1:52.89). The Bluejackets finished sixth in the 400-meter relay (46.63) and fourth in the 800-meter relay (1:36.57).

Ripley’s Shelby Akins finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.74) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.95) at the Class 2A meet.

Pawnee made a few trips to the podium in the Class 2A meet. Jaidan Alley finished third in the 400-meter dash (1:03.40). Autumn OnlyAChief finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:49.52). Jaelyn Jestes finished sixth in the shot put (32 feet, five inches).

Agra’s lone representative Lindsey Leal-McBride finished ninth in the 800-meter run (2:39.59). The Morrison Lady Wildcats’ 3,200-meter relay team finished 10th in the Class 2A meet. Yale’s Evan Prince didn’t qualify for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing eighth in his heat.
