Uncertainty still swirls around Oklahoma State’s quarterbacks

STILLWATER, Okla. — Less than six months ago, there was a persistent question about who would be the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma State football team. After an injury to starting true freshman quarterback Wes Lunt in the third game of the season, that question has returned.

There’s still no sign from the OSU coaches as to whether Lunt is healthy enough to return to his starting role, or just how much longer they will go with redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh.

So when would Gundy make a call on who would be the starter for Saturday’s game at Kansas?

“Saturday,” Gundy said. “... But I’m sure by Friday everybody will know. Really the best way, and the fairest way to put it is Wes’ reps in practice will progress as his body allows.”

While Gundy said Saturday would be when he would likely name the starter, OSU offensive coordinator Todd Monken said the starter would probably be known earlier than that.

“It’ll be decided midweek because someone has to take the reps with the ones. You have to move in the direction that you want to go with your offense,” Monken said. “Obviously by Tuesday or Wednesday we’ll know. Now whether everyone around the country will know, I don’t know, but we will.”

Gundy was willing to at least make mention that Lunt is back practicing with the OSU offense, though that is about as far as he would take it.

“He’s out there with us and is certainly day-to-day just based on the pain that he has and as it lessens throughout his recovery,” Gundy said. “He’ll have an opportunity to do more in each practice.”

Monken said Lunt has been throwing the ball, but they are waiting to see how mobile he can be coming off a knee injury.

“Wes was out there throwing the other night in pads. He threw the ball really well, and that gave us some encouragement,” Monken said.

“We just have to get to the point where we are confident he can run. He ran a little bit the other night, so we’re hopeful to get him back this week so we can see if he can protect himself. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

Though Gundy wouldn’t commit to the potential of a two-quarterback system, he did say that they need to continue to take advantage of Walsh’s talents.

“If he were at another position, offense or defense, he would be in the game somewhere, somehow, whether he’d be a pass rusher, a run stopper, a route runner, coverage guy, support safety,” Gundy said. “So just because he plays the quarterback position, we would need to not totally eliminate the thought of maybe using him to our advantage to help us win football games.”
