Lady Redskins rout Lady Pioneers in 6A regionals

BIXBY, Okla. — The Stillwater Lady Pioneers struggled to put the ball in the basket but the Union Lady Redskins had no problems doing so as they eliminated Stillwater 62-32 in the Class 6A Regionals.

“We played really well and weren’t able to outscore them,” coach Carl Treat said. “We had too many turnovers and allowed too many second-chance points.”

The game was tied at four midway through the first quarter but the Lady Redskins held a 16-4 lead after the first. The second quarter wasn’t much better as Stillwater was held to nine points and trailed 29-13 at halftime.

“They shot the ball at a high percentage,” Treat said. “They scored a lot of transition baskets. We struggled to score. Their pressure defense really got to us.”

Union outscored Stillwater 33-19 in the second half. Senior Austyn Iven led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 15 points in her final game. It was also the last game for seniors Blake Bulard, Callie Atkins, Jenny Scarborough and Drew Baker. The loss ended the Lady Pioneers’ season at 13-10.

“I was proud of their effort,” Treat said. “We had a lot of injuries throughout the season. One was season ending and we had several that players missed games here and there. The girls worked hard. I wish we would have been able to win a couple more games for the seniors.”

Treat said though it’s hard to see the seniors go, he is excited for next season.

“I’m looking forward to the ones we have coming back,” Treat said. “It’s going to be a fun group to work with.”
