Majors rally to remain unbeaten in tournament

Three Rivers got an early four-run lead against the Stillwater Majors on Friday, but Phillip Wilson matched that in a single at bat in the fourth.

Wilson’s grand slam gave the Majors the momentum to turn a four-run deficit into a 10-6 victory, putting the Majors at 3-0 after Day 2 at the Brad Holt Memorial Baseball Tournament at Couch Park.

Down 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Stillwater led off with three consecutive hits, the third of which was a two-run double by Jonathan Frasier to score Davis Bradley and Devin Mayes. Casey Barrier advanced to first on catcher’s interference, and Tripp Callaway reached base on an error to load the bases.

Then Wilson blasted over left field.

“It was huge,” Ferguson said. “That was clutch. That changes the entire complexion of the ballgame. ... That was a huge momentum change for us. Once that happened, it seemed like the spirits in the dugout lifted and it seemed like we just settled in.”

Being a pitcher himself, Wilson opened a window to that sinking feeling in the stomach of a pitcher who just got slammed.

“It’s like four runs going up on you like that,” he said. “It can change a ballgame really quick — kind of like it did (Friday). It’s not good.”

The victory increases the Majors’ streak to eight games, and the usually clean-shaven Wilson is proudly partipating in his own celebration.

“This action right here,” Wilson said, gesturing to the facial hair, “it’s not going off till we lose, so hopefully I won’t be shaving for a long time.”
