Oklahoma State men's golf wins Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Tourney

DALLAS — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team posted a closing 283 during the third round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Tuesday to emerge victorious at Royal Oaks Country Club.

The Cowboys began the day in second place and two shots behind Texas Tech at the par-71, 7,068-yard layout. However, OSU used its 1-under closing score to finish at 10-under 842 and four shots clear of the Red Raiders and New Mexico. For the Cowboys, it was their first victory since the 2011 NCAA Colorado Regional.

Individually, OSU’s Ian Davis posted a closing 71 to tie for medalist honors with Iowa’s Ian Vandersee. The duo finished the tournament with matching 7-under 206 totals to come in a shot clear of the field. The victory made the Cowboy junior the first OSU player to claim medalist honors since Kevin Twayat the 2011 NCAA Regional.

Davis made the turn at 2-over 35 after posting bogeys on three of his final six holes, but rallied to put together a bogey-free inward nine that included birdies at Nos. 10 and 15 to get back to level par and move into the top spot individually.

Junior Talor Gooch joined Davis in the top 10, tying for sixth place after posting a 71 of his own to finish at 4-under 209.

Freshman Jordan Niebrugge closed with a 72 to finish tied for 29th place at 215, while senior Sean Einhausfired the squad’s low round of the day with a 69 to move into a tie for 39th place at 217.

Sophomore Patrick Winther signed for a 73 following his final round for a 218 total to tie for 44th place.

The Cowboys had a pair of players competing individually as well. Junior Kevin Dougherty and sophomore Tanner Kestersoneach closed with 79s. Dougherty finished at 214 and tied for 26th, while Kesterson finished at 221 and tied for 59th place.

OSU will be back in action on Feb. 6, at the Ameri Ari Invitational in Hawaii.
