DEPEW, Okla. —
After suffering a 9-6 loss to the Caddo Bruins Friday in the cold and rainy weather, the Glencoe Panthers recovered Saturday with a 9-4 victory over the Bruins to clinch their spot in the Class A state baseball tournament.
“I’m excited for the kids,” Glencoe coach Tony Cazzelle said. “It’s the first trip since the spring of 2007. It’s nice for our two seniors (Nathan Melton and Taylor Cavett) to make a trip to the state tournament.”
Glencoe fell behind early as Caddo grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers were able to take advantage of Caddo’s pitcher wearing down. Claytin Beaver lead off with a single and scored on a RBI double by Hunter Hall. Ty Lazenby followed with a RBI single to tie the game. Andrew Kuhn hit a single to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
The next inning, Glencoe put the game away. Beaver hit a three-run home run, scoring Cavett and Jake Lazenby. Hall followed with a solo home run. Bryce Williams drove in a fifth run with a single.
Beaver and Hall were the leading hitters as both went 3 for 4. Melton earned the win, allowing four runs on two hits, walking one and striking out 10.
On Friday, errors put the Panthers in an early hole as they committed three. The Bruins took full advantage and lead 7-0 after the first. Glencoe rallied with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh. Melton was the leading hitter as he went 2 for 3 with a home run and double.
The Panthers (25-9) start play in the state tournament Thursday at Palmer Field in Oklahoma City.
