STILLWATER, Okla. —
Oklahoma State may have its new offensive coordinator in place before the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.
The Columbia (Mo.) Tribune, citing an unnamed source, reported former Missouri coordinator Dave Yost has been offered the job left vacant when Todd Monken left to become the head coach at Southern Miss this week.
Gundy and Yost apparently have some history together. The Tribune reports that they spent time last winter at Northwestern with several other spread offensive staffs, and then later the OSU staff travel to Columbia to share notes.
Yost stepped down from his position at Missouri last week following a 5-7 finish in Mizzou’s first year in the SEC, after spending 12 seasons on the Tigers staff. Trying to overcome a rash of injuries on offense — which included quarterback James Franklin — Missouri failed to become eligible for a bowl game for the first time since 2004.
The Tribune reported that it’s unclear if Yost is strongly considering Gundy’s offer, but it could like a natural fit for Yost and OSU. Yost also coached quarterbacks at Missouri, like Monken did with OSU, juggled his coordinator duties with coaching the quarterbacks.
In his time at Missouri, Yost coached three quarterbacks – Brad Smith, Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert – who combined to earn 12 All-Big 12 honors.
Smith became the first quarterback in FBS history to throw for more than 8,000 yards and run for 4,000 in a career. Daniel was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007. Gabbert became a first-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft.
