STILLWATER, Okla. —
So much has been made about the 1-2 combination of Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith at running back, players like Desmond Roland often get lost in the shuffle.
But with the dismissal of Hershel Sims following his arrest, Roland has started to see more playing time. And it’s starting to pay off for Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys.
As the team begins its second scrimmage of the season at 4 p.m. Saturday inside Boone Pickens Stadium Roland will likely see his fair share of carries.
“We really have to have three running backs, that’s why we play three,” Gundy said. “Des is doing a nice job for us also. Desmond Roland is a guy that’s changed a little bit. He hasn’t arrived yet, but he’s considerably different now than he was at this time last year. He’s taken some hits. He’s receiving the ball. He’s making it through practice and not acting like it’s the end of the world. Another couple weeks of good practice and he could really solidify a third spot for us.”
