Cowgirl soccer gets another 1-0 victory

OSU tops Weber State Sunday at Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State remained perfect on the young season as the No. 5 Cowgirls defeated Weber State, 1-0, Sunday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

George Christie’s first-career goal, which came in the 64th minute, was the lone score as OSU improved to 2-0-0, with WSU falling to 0-2-0.

For the second-straight game, OSU owned a decisive advantage in the offensive numbers as the Cowgirls outshot Weber State, 17-8. And the one goal proved to once again be enough as senior goalie AD Franch notched her 34th career shutout to move into a tie for 14th place on the NCAA career list.

“The game was okay. Obviously, there’s a lot for us to work on going forward,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “A lot of these kids haven’t done the Friday-Sunday back-to-back (games), and it showed. But we’re happy with the win. There are certainly a lot of positives with it, but we’ve got work to do before next weekend.”

OSU had several scoring opportunities in the opening half. At the 29:35 mark, Allie Stephenson blasted a shot that WSU goalie Ryann Waldman saved off the crossbar, and the Cowgirls nearly scored twice in the final two minutes of the half.

With less than two minutes before intermission, Caitlyn Biggers set up Abbey Akin with a great pass, but Akin’s shot sailed high. And just before the horn sounded, after OSU scrambled to get off a corner kick, Heidi Greeson had her shot saved by a diving Waldman to keep the match scoreless.

The 0-0 score held until the 63:55 mark. After a foul just outside the 18-yard box, Taylor Mathews sent the free kick into the box. Christie gained step on her defender and flicked a header past Waldman for the score.

The Wildcats’ best scoring chances came in the second half, but Franch recorded a pair of saves and secured the shutout.

OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowgirls host Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. before a Sunday contest at home against Creighton.
