STILLWATER, Okla. —
During practice this week, Oklahoma State women’s associate head coach Candace Whitaker played the role of Texas Tech’s Monique Smalls to help the Cowgirls prepare for their Big 12 opener against the Red Raiders.
It seems fitting that Whitaker voluntarily take that role — considering 10 years ago she was in Small’s shoes.
Known then as Candi White, the former Texas Tech point guard led the Lady Raiders to the Sweet 16 under coach Marsha Sharp.
Kristy Curry has since taken over for Sharp and installed her own version of Lady Raider basketball over the past seven years. But that doesn’t mean things in Lubbock have changed a whole lot.
“We feel very fortunate to have (Whitaker) on our staff,” Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said. “I don’t know if she’ll know the plays that are being called because she played under a different coach, but she knows their overall scheme of things. She’s very knowledgeable and she’s been a tremendous asset for us this week in practice because she has played that position at that particular school.”
