CUSHING, Okla. —
Cushing’s Jai Conley typically is more of a facilitator than a scorer — often dishing the ball to Drew Wilson and Nick Tanner in the post.
Tuesday Conley showed he can shoot the ball too — hitting a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left to lead Cushing to a 64-62 win over Cleveland.
“We were looking for Nick or Drew,” Cushing coach Bobby Tanner said. “They just left him open so he took the shot and it went in.”
Behind 24 points from Wilson and another 20 from Nick Tanner, Cushing (10-5) built a sizable lead, taking a 52-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
That’s where things started to unravel for Cushing.
Derek Reeves got Cleveland going by knocking down several 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Cushing saw its lead dwindle from 15 to zero in nothing flat. Reeves finished with 28 points — most of them coming in the fourth quarter for Cleveland.
“We had a 15 point lead at one point but they scored with about 30 seconds left to take their first lead in the game,” Bobby Tanner said. “We built that good lead but they closed that gap with a flurry in the fourth quarter.”
Conley finished with 5 points. Bingham Hightower also finished with 5 points, while Keegan Myers tallied 4 points. Dillon Wasson rounded out the scoring with 2 points for Cushing, which travels to Glenpool Tuesday.
Along with the boys, the Cushing girls thumped Cleveland 63-22.
