STILLWATER, Okla. —
For the past two months, the Oklahoma State University football team did it’s recruiting with the offensive coordinator position vacant after Todd Monken left to take the head coach job at Southern Miss last December. Wednesday at the National Signing Day press conference, coach Mike Gundy said he hopes to have that position filled within a week to 10 days.
“I have had a couple of conversations with guys that I’m interested in,” Gundy said. “Now it comes down to whether they have interest in us and we have to work through all the details.”
Coach didn’t disclose the names. Gundy said he hasn’t had much time to think about the position as he was dealing with the end of the season and recruiting.
“I’ve only talked to two people and that’s because I had the time and bumped into them,” Gundy said. “All of us are extremely busy at this time of year. As soon as the bowl game was over, I had two or three days which I spent with my family. Once we get into recruiting, I’m in one city or another. I’m in a school, a car or a home.”
Coach said potential recruits have asked about the situation but has reassured them that the offensive philosophy will remain the same.
“I tell them this is the third time we’ve run into this situation during the last six years with Larry (Fedora), counting myself as one, Dana (Holgorsen) and Todd. So really four,” Gundy said. “Our offensive philosophy hasn’t changed. We are going to be spread. We are going to run it and throw it. We are going to play fast and be aggressive. ... Fortunately for me it’s happened so many times in the last four years that they believe that.”
Besides Monken, Oklahoma State lost receiver coach Doug Meachem to the University of Houston and parted ways with defensive coordinator Bill Young. Gundy said the biggest challenge in losing coaches is keeping the relationships with recruits.
“The relationships that you established are difficult to mend and move forward,” Gundy said. “The trust and those things. At the end of the day, we have to have values on what we are on offense, defense and special teams and how we want to handle our team. ... If that doesn’t change, the players understand the importance of who we are.”
