PERRY, Okla. —
The Perry Lady Maroons went on a historical run finishing with a 35-5 record, reaching the state tournament for the first time since 1988. A key component to their run was senior pitcher Jayde Hansen who shut down the opposition.
Hansen said she couldn’t think of a better way to end her high school than to pitch at state.
“It’s a huge accomplishment making history, going 35-5,” Hansen said. “It was really exciting. I wish we would have won but it was a great experience.”
Though, Hansen looks calm in the circle with her team’s success riding on her shoulders, she would tell you it’s a different story on the inside.
“It is a little nerve-wracking,” Hansen said. “Going into the game I just have an adrenaline rush and it just helps me get through.”
This season, Hansen has done more than just get through the season. In the circle, she posted a 17-5 record with a 1.37 ERA. She struck out 201 and only walked 36 with four hit batters. The senior pitcher also earned three saves.
In the regional opener on Sept. 27, Hansen pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 14 Lady Demons’ in Perry’s 8-0 victory over Perkins-Tryon. The senior pitcher led Perry to victories against Chisholm and Newkirk to clinch a spot in the state tournament. Not only was Hansen a great pitcher, she was a solid with the bat. In 113 at-bats she posted a .460 batting average, scored 45 runs and drove in 28. The senior also hit 11 doubles, six triples and one home run. Besides pitching, the senior also played shortstop. At both positions, very few balls were misplayed as she only committed five errors for a 93 fielding percentage. Hansen’s performance earned an All-Region and All-State selection. Hansen’s career isn’t over as she will continue her playing career at Butler College in El Dorado, Kan.
“I’m glad I get to play another four years,” Hansen said. “It’s great I get the opportunity to do so.”
