STILLWATER, Okla. —
Stillwater coach Seth Condley is a man that plays the percentages.
Condley knew that a loss to Enid in Friday’s district opener would seriously hurt his team’s chances of making the state playoffs.
He told his team that, and Stillwater stepped up in a 1-0 win Friday night at Pioneer Stadium
“This is our first district game, but this will go a long way in whether we make the playoffs or not,” Condley said. “If we lost this, we were going to maybe have a 20 percent chance at making playoffs. The guys responded and played well and that’s a big win.
“We did just enough to eek out a win against a very good Enid team.”
Stillwater (4-4) lost 1-0 in last year’s meeting. John Beckman provided the only scoring for the Pioneers with a goal in the 26th minute.
From there on, the defense, led by defender Davis Crane took over.
“We were really pumped up for this game because it means a lot for our season,” Crane said. “We were just hungry for the win tonight.
“We knew they played a lot of long balls, so we were able to neutralize the long ball pretty well.”
Goalie Ty Dilley had five saves for the Pioneers.
At two points in the second half, Dilley blocked a header in front of the net and another shot attempt from close range late in the match.
“They didn’t have a lot of dangerous shots, but some of those through balls, he came out when he had to,” Condley said. “I don’t want to say we’re lucky, because we played well and they played well too, but we got the one goal and that’s all we needed.”
This victory was particularly sweet for Condley, who celebrated the victory on his 32nd birthday Friday with his three children on the Pioneer Stadium turf.
When asked what he was going to do, Condley kept it simple.
“I’m going home and relaxing.”
