Brown: New sports reporter happy to be home

STILLWATER, Okla. — A sports reporter is not just a job, it is a lifestyle. I believe that the lifestyle is incredibly enjoying.

I am the Stillwater NewsPress’ new sports reporter. I am excited about being in Stillwater and to be covering area high school sports and Oklahoma State University.

I graduated from high school in not so distant Cushing, so I am familiar with the area and am glad to be back. Following high school, I then went to Northeastern State University where I majored in journalism. I worked at The Northeastern, the college’s newspaper, my junior and senior years. I also was a sports stringer for the Tahlequah Daily Press my senior year.

After graduating, I moved to Elk City to be the sports editor at the Daily Elk Citian.

From Elk City, I moved to Mustang to work at the Mustang Times as the sports editor.

A little personal knowledge about me is that I have a wonderful wife named Jessica, going on three years now. I have two dogs, both labs, Cali and Gunner. The two dogs are treated like our kids. I am very passionate about duck hunting, and yes, both of my dogs hunt with me. And I love sports, which is kind of obvious.

I am extremely excited to be back in the area of my roots doing what I love to do — covering sports. I am incredibly lucky because both mine and my wife’s family are from Cushing. The move to the area is not only better for me but it is also a step closer to both of our families.

I’m sure that not everyone is not going to feel the same about my sports related thoughts. But we will give it a try anyway.

I think that faking an injury to get a timeout or at least slow an offense down is cowardly.

In football if a game-winning field goal is coming up and a coach calls a timeout just before the snap but kicker kicks the ball through the uprights it should not be called back. I can take it a step further, if the kicker misses the kick then he should get to kick it again. This will take out the last-second timeouts.

I think all really close calls in baseball should be reviewed. I don’t mean like in football where they look at it for five minutes. But in between pitches a quick look would help.

If a team is going to walk someone, I feel that balls should not have to actually be thrown. It will make baseball go a little bit faster.

The new rules in football have changed the game. I know that safety is a No. 1 priority but when a defensive player has to hit a strike zone, because he can not hit the head or below the knees sometimes, the rules have gotten out of hand.

Those are just some of my thoughts on sports.

Again, I am truly blessed to be a part of the Stillwater NewsPress and am very excited about the future. I hope that I can bring my skills to the readers in a positive way.
